The Paraympics Games is a major international multi-sport even involving athletes with a range of disabilities, including impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment and intelectual impairment. There are Winter and Summer Paralympic Games, which since 1988 summer Games in Seoul, South Korea, are held almost immediately following the respective Olympic Games. All Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
Recently, the 2016 Summer Paralympic, the fifteenth Summer Parlympic Games had held in Rio de Janerio, Brazil from 7 September to 18 September 2016 officially opened by President Michel Temer. The games marked the first time a Latin American and South American city hosted the event, the second Southern Hemisphere city and nation, the first one being the 2000 Summer Paralympic in Sydney and also the first time a Lusophone country hosted the event. These games saw the introduction of two new sports to the Paralympic program : canoeing and the parathriathlon.
The official emblem for the 2016 Summer Paralympics was designed by the Brazillian agency Tatil Design, and unveiled on 26 November 2011 during th Christmas tree lighting at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. The emblem incorporates a hears and the infinity symbol, representing a beating heart and an infinite energy to overcome obstacles.The official mascots of the 2016 Summer Paralympics and Olympics were unveiled on 24 November 2014, with their respective names, Tom and Vinicius, choosen via a public vote whose results were announced on 14 December 2015.
The opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Paralympics took place on the evening of 7 September 2016 at the Maracana Stadium with the theme " Todo Mundo tem um Coracao" that means "Everybody Has a Heart". In opening speech, IPC Phillip Craven invited viewers to see the true meaning of sport and the true definition of ability. It is about 159 National Paralympic Committees are participating at the 2016 Games, with total of 4,342 athletes taking part. Then, Events in 22 sports are scheduled to be contested at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Two new sports will also be added to the Paralympics in Rio that is canoeing and triathlon.
In 15 September 2016, they revealed winners for Whang Youn Dai achievement award. Ibrahim Al Hussein and Tatyana McFadden have been revealed as the recipients of the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. The pair were selected as the athletes who best exemplify the spirit of the Paralympic Games and the Paralympics values. These final two winners were choosen on Thursday by an independent panel of judges comprising of IPC Governing Board members.
The closing ceremony of the 2016 Suumer Paralympics took place on the evening of 18 September 2016 at te Maracana Stadium.It featured concert performances by an array of prominent Brazilian musicians, as well as the formal handover to Tokyo, host of the 2020 Summer Paralympics, and closing remarks
